The Pink Jams!-Rocking the Runway event and fashion show was about much more than fashion and breast cancer awareness. It was a spirited celebration of life and style that absolutely flipped off the nasty nemesis of breast cancer with its cheeky lively attitude.
The energy at the pre-event VIP reception was electric. Headliner designer Christian Siriano of Project Runaway fame posed for photos and mixed with the rest of the VIPs which included several local designers who had designed outfits for the survivor models to wear on the runway. Champagne flutes were filled and pink cosmos flowed from the bar while everyone sipped and nibbled in anticipation of the big fashion show event.
The runway was set with bright foot lights and goodie bags on every seat. A touching video introducing the 14 brave young women who were about to strut down the runway. Each had been diagnosed with breast cancer before reaching age 40. This fact is significant since current accepted medical standards do not advise that women under the age of 40 receive regular mammography.
The show began and survivors slinked and preened like professional models down the runway, each proudly wearing the “Pink Couture” dress designed just for them by local Washington, DC designers such as Kenny Flanagan (KAS), Dennya, Aidh, Estella Couture and several others.
The crowd cheered and applauded in full admiration and support for these women. One young survivor proudly whipped off her wig as she finished her runway walk, displaying her shorn head to let everyone know that she is still undergoing chemotherapy.
The “Pink Tie Guys” also walked the runway to demonstrate their support for breast cancer awareness as well as their style and panache in sharp suits and elegant pink ties designed by Daniel Figueredo for FIG. These 14 gorgeous local celebrities included Jorge Andres, sports anchor for Telemundo; Reed Doughty, Safety for the Washington Redskins; Ivan Carter, Host for Washington Post Live; and Brandon Banks, wide receiver for the Washington Redskins.
Then Christian Siriano introduced his 2012 spring collection in a wonderful assortment of energetic lime greens, daffodil yellows, smoky champagne and deep pinks as the crowd applauded and cheered. His young models moved with energy and ease displaying the best elements of each design with flair.
At the conclusion of the fashion shows, Christian Siriano and Christa Florence, president and founder of Pink Jams! presented a $30,000 check to the Capital Breast Care Center in Washington, DC.
