At Paris Fashion Week, the Chanel Spring 2012 show was like a high fashion scene out of the little mermaid. On October 4, the Grand Palais in Paris became a sea of pearls, sparkles, and seashells. Karl Lagerfeld never fails to go completely over the top with his shows with everything from set decorations to the actual clothes. Coming from a designer who has shown fur with an iceberg on the runway, a giant Chanel suit and farm house as well as shows with fountains to four-year-olds and everything in between. The mermaid-esque theme actually fit quite nicely with his collection of pearls and feminine pieces with an edge for a very classic Karl meets Coco vibe. It also isn’t a shock given his new Chanel girl Blake Lively‘s recent mermaid look with long wavy red hair while being decked in Chanel head to toe.
The show was complete with giant sea shells in which Florence Welch from Florence + the Machine performed live inside of during the show. The Chanel brand always maintains such a classic look which makes it so exciting for every season when Karl finds a way to bring something completely new to the runway. Classic tweeds, pinks and of course the black and white combo screams Chanel. The show started with simple white and pink suits with subtle sparkle and pearl details. The next looks added a very geometric feel with diagonal black piping detailing on white dresses, sweaters, jackets and skirts. Textures and prints were the show stoppers of the collection mixing vivid colors with crystal detailing and black and pink petals.
With over 80 looks, there was tons of room for variety withing the collection. The reoccurring themes of tweeds and sweet wearable dresses were as always a must. The under the sea vibe was definitely present with white bathing suits, light blue beaded and ruffled pieces and tailored iridescent jackets. Model Miranda Kerr worked the runway in a blue tweed vest belted with a string of pearls and paired with a wave detailed skirt and silver zipper booties. Swim suits paired with signature Chanel costume jewelery and light blue iridescent ruffles screamed underwater high fashion. While Chanel seems to never go wrong, it was still pleasantly surprising to see how new and fresh this Spring 2012 show was with Chanel gone mermaid chic!
