5th Annual Green Cup Polo To Help The Environment

Are you a fan of polo? Do want to support initiatives that benefit the environment? If you answered ‘yes’ to either of these questions then the Green Cup of Polo this weekend is for you! You probably never associated polo with helping the environment but the “greening” of professional sports has grown throughout the United States over the last few years. Scientist Allen Hershkowitz and The Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) have worked with professional sport organizations to create sustainable, environmentally sound and responsible stadiums and events all over the country. And now Mr. Hershkowitz has brought his experience to work with the Green Cup Polo tournament at the Capital Polo Club.

The Green Cup of Polo is the first social event to be certified ‘green’ by the leonardo academy. The Green Cup Polo aims to continue this certification through 2010. To be true to its mission, the event management incorporates green intelligent practices that decrease the event’s ecological footprint as much as possible.

On the weekend of September 17th, 2011, Washingtonians, environmentalists, diplomatic and political leaders, DC equestrians, and socialites will gather at the Capitol Polo Club for a day of polo-fun at the 5th Annual Green Cup of Polo. The day will provide plenty of entertainment for the entire family including two exciting polo matches between local and visiting high/medium goal teams including John Walsh (from Americas Most Wanted TV Show), an equine demonstration by the Montgomery County Mounted Police, a stunning freestyle equestrian performance and much more. The Green Cup of Polo is also one of the only events with premium tailgate spots where you can picnic and watch the action front-row.

In addition to the Green Cup Polo tournament on September 17th 2011, NRDC will also be the benefactor of Green Cup Eco Gala, which will be held September 15th2011 kicking of the Green Cup weekend. The Gala will be a black tie evening of music, auctions, fashion and an opportunity to meet the VIPs, sponsors and Polo players. The profits from this auction will go to the NRDC. The GC Eco Gala fashion show will feature eco-friendly designers with “eco conscious couture” designs which will be auctioned off on line by the prestigious Christies Green Auction team. This will be Green Cup’s first Eco Gala and having NRDC as Green Cup’s global beneficiary.
