edge. This year’s winner is Charleston Artist Jim Victor. Former business man and Charleston resident Jim Victor openly admits he doesn’t know a lot about the art industry, has never taken a painting class and has only entered his abstract paintings in two art shows, however after winning the juried Piccolo Spoleto Mayor’s Award last week it’s clear the abstract expressionist has another career ahead of him.Jim Victor collection now available at the Michael Mitchell Gallery in the Upper King Design District
After placing second in last year’s outdoor exhibition the self-taught painter returned to capture the Best of Show honor last week with “Sublime.” The bold reds and blues of this 64-inch square oil/acrylic textured piece caught the eye of the judges, and will now reside in the Mayor’s office for the next year before circulating through city offices. Jim Victor’s impressive collection of artwork, including both “Mystery” and “Sublime”, is on display in the Michael Mitchell Gallery located in the heart of the Upper King Design District.
A reception will be held at 5:00 PM on July 21 at the Michael Mitchell Gallery, which represents Victor. Mayor Riley will attend along with other Piccolo officials and members of Charleston’s art community. Artists Billie Sumner and Victoria Ellis were fundamental in putting together the award program and Outdoor Piccolo Spoleto Juried Art Show, with oversight from Ellen Dressler Moryl and the Charleston Department of Cultural Affairs. Although it’s still called the Mayor’s Purchase Award, entry fees are used to secure the painting for the City’s collection.
Come meet this recently “discovered” artist.
