In 2006, the Basic Screening Survey of Texas Public School Children conducted a nation wide survey on the dental practices and health of children between the ages of 6-8. 44% of the children had untreated dental cavities and decay. In an effort to help combat these rising cavity rates and help build healthy smiles Colgate’s Bright Smiles, Bright Futures has teamed up with Wal-Mart to create Building Smiles Together.
Caravanning across America the team will provide free dental screenings and oral health education to children in need. Throughout this past year, a fleet of Colgate’s Bright Smiles, Bright Futures mobile dental vans has made appearances on-site at participating Wal-Mart stores. The dental vans are staffed by volunteer dental professionals, eager to provide children ages 1- 12 with free screenings, treatment referrals and key learning tools to help them build a lifetime of healthy habits.
By combining the free screenings and education with Wal-Mart’s everyday low prices and broad assortment of oral care products, this initiative will provide families the much-needed access to the education and everyday oral care necessities they need to live better, healthier lives. Colgate and Wal-Mart kicked off the “Building Smiles Together” tour, in Ft. Worth at the beginning of June.
