Nothing compels theater-goers quite like thwarted lovers, and no thwarted lovers captivate an audience quite like Maria and Tony, of the classic American musical “West Side Story.” This powerful, enchanting tale of love, rivalry, and secrecy in New York City in the mid-twentieth century has been delighting viewers since 1957! And now, Chicagoans can be transported to the back-streets of New York City, rife with passion and danger. The 2011 tour of West Side Story takes center-stage in the Chicago Cadillac Palace Theater on July 19th. “Something’s Coming” to Chicago, and you’ll want to be there when the curtains rise to reveal this modern rendition of Shakespeare’s beloved “Romeo and Juliet.”
Recreating a musical as beloved as West Side Story does not come without its risks. But it seems West Side Story has returned in a blaze of glory, directed by David Saint, the Associate Director on Broadway. The revival of Arthur Laurent’s play and Leonard Bernstein and Stephen Sondheim’s sophisticated, entertaining music and lyrics has achieved critical acclaim, culminating in a Grammy Award for Best Soundtrack for a Musical. You’ll find it impossible not to snap your fingers to “When You’re a Jet,” to stomp your feet to the tune of “America,” and to sway along to “I Feel Pretty.” This production of West Side Story features the original choreography of Jerome Robbin, as reproduced by Tony Award nominee Joey McKneely.
This beautiful tale of star-crossed lovers will dance onto the stage of Chicago’s Cadillac Palace Theater on July 19th, and entertain audiences until August 14th. Get ready for the Sharks and the Jets to descend upon Chicago, it’s a musical duel that you will not want to miss. Make your “Tonight” one to remember, at the Cadillac Palace Theater.
