Staying Fashionable and Dry in the Rain

Spring weather has been especially tough on those of us living in the Northeast, as we’ve suffered through weeks of dreary days with fog, mist, drizzle, thunderstorms, and ultimate downpours.  The only benefit of the unfortunate weather is that it has left me with plenty of time indoors to research and invest in a few key, rainy day, pieces that help you keep dry, while remaining stylish, on the wettest of days.  Here are three recommendations for some additions to your waterproof wardrobe:

1) Most important is a waterproof, or at least water resistant, rain jacket.  A trench is a practical, traditional, timeless piece, as evidenced by Jackie O, Catherine Deneuve, and Audrey Hepburn in Breakfast at Tiffanys. Flattering for all figures if it includes a belt to cinch your waist, there are plenty of varieties available in both short and long styles, boxy and slim fit, classic in cream, khaki, navy, or black, but also available in prints, stripes, and vibrant colors to suit any personality.  Lust-worthy is a Roland Mouret Centaur Trench Coat, but on sale at $885, there are, of course, more wallet friendly options available.  Gap has a short version for less than $90 available on its website in two colors– black and gray– and is fashionable enough to make Rachel Zoe‘s recommendation list on The Zoe Report.  Look for styles similar to those of Burberry, Celine, and Gryphon.

2) Waterproof footwear.  There are a multitude of options out there for every season, ranging from the colorful, sturdy wellies from Hunter, to Sperry Coastal Rain skimmers, or the rain flats or jellies made by Tory Burch.  Made from plastic or rubber, depending on your choice, they are impervious to the puddles and will resist becoming soggy.  You can always stash a nicer pair of shoes in your purse or your desk to change into if you have an important business meeting and avoid having to worry about getting your good shoes ruined by the rain, or worry about wet feet.

3) A trusty umbrella.  If you’re into brand names and designer labels, consider purchasing Burberry‘s iconic plaid umbrella, available at $125 from retailers such as Bloomingdale’s.  For something simpler and just as useful, go with an oversized black umbrella that will keep you protected, like Olivia Palermo did recently.

By checking the weather in advance and preparing accordingly with these few rainy day staples, perhaps you can enjoy those pina coladas and getting caught in the rain days, after all.
