Last Minute Gifts for Mom

It can get tough to come up with a gift to delight mom on one of her most special days of the year – after all, she is celebrating having you in her life – so the pressure can be enormous!   Flowers and sentimental cards may be ubiquitous, but surely you can conjure something that truly represents mom’s desires. Keep her interests in mind and you’re sure to find a gift to make mom’s heart swoon this Sunday.

If mom is eclectic, athletic, or just plain-ole’ fun-loving, these funky new shoes by Fila just might fit

the bill.  Called Skeletoes, they boast a four-toe “skeleton” design that almost mimics ultra-fitted high-tech socks with soles.  At first glance, I personally didn’t have much interest – they looked kinda funny, and weren’t the easiest to put on – but in less than two weeks I noticed they’d become my shoe of choice for workouts, toolin’ around town or doing anything outdoors (a major plus in Colorado).  And there’s not a day that goes by when someone doesn’t comment on or ask about these shoes when I have them on – seems they generate quite a bit of interest.  Even if mom doesn’t jump for joy at first glance, I can almost guarantee they’ll become one of her favorites when she feels the pep they add to her step.  Kids’ sizes are available as well, so if mom gets the urge, the brood can match to her heart’s desire.  Available at sporting goods stores or Fila.com, prices start at $55.

Reclaimed vintage jewels and luxury fabrics create one-of-a-kind adornments for mom. Photos courtesy of Twisted Crystals.

Etsy.com has become a guilty pleasure of mine – I can’t tell you how often I ask, “where did the time go,” after perusing all of the wonderful handmade items offered on this site.  The creativity, skill and ingenuity of some of these artisans is just astounding!  Not to disappoint, the vintage, romantic or flirty mom will love the lovely creations I found at Twisted Crystals – whimsical one-of-a-kind handcrafted fabric and jewel flower pieces. Often made of reclaimed vintage jewel parts (read: the remaining piece of grandma’s cherished earrings, or mom’s partly destroyed broach) and freshwater pearls and crystals.  The result is a beautifully unique piece of art that sure to make mom’s heart flutter. $32 and up at TwistedCrystals.Etsy.com

The hardcore mom is sure to love this new Timex Ironman Sleek 150 watch.  With “TapScreen” technology, it makes it easy to navigate while moving, and includes a target time pacer, labeled interval timer and other performance-enhancing tools so mom can focus less on the tools to make her workouts better and actually get to the task of, well, making them better.  This watch comes with 16 built in timers intuitively named “warm, slow, fast, cool,” to take the guessing out of managing workouts. Available at sporting goods stores or Timex.com for $90.

What mom doesn’t treasure keeping every memorable card hand picked and lovingly presented by her children?  I personally have a box of birthday cards, Valentine’s cards, even those I received at my wedding, tucked away so I can relive the special moments anytime I choose.  The Greeting Card and Keepsake Archive Album has taken this idea to the next level, creating beautiful, compact albums that not only store, but display those cherished cards so you can thumb through them at your heart’s desire.  They’re nice enough to keep on the coffee table yet not worry about the cards getting damaged – each album comes with patented “infinity sleeves,” designed specifically to protect keepsakes from environmental irritants that degrade photos and paper (of which the biggest culprit is the human hand). They allow for full enjoyment and full protection of your most cherished items (most cherished besides your kids, that is).  An added bonus is the company’s support of “operation gratitude,” a donation-based organization that sends care packages to U.S. Military deployed in the world’s most hostile regions.  It’s a practical gift that mom will enjoy for decades to come.  Visit GetPostmarked.com to find a local retailer or shop online.  Archive albums cost $24.50 or $39.99.

Lothentique’s Linge Blanc collection boasts crisp notes of sandalwood, white Lily and white musk. Photo courtesy of Lothentique.

The elegant mom will love the linge blanc collection of bath and body treasures from Lothentique.  Infused with subtle notes of sandalwood, white lily and white musk, the collection features exquisitely packaged bath and body items including linen spray, soap pillows in a quaint French-inspired basket, and decadent bath oils.  My personal favorite is the fragrance oil with diffuser reeds which presents a simple way to scent and decorate any room.  Feel like Paris in springtime even when you’re knee-deep in diapers and Dora.  Collection prices start at $14.50  at Lothantique.com.
