Volunteer for the Avon Walk Boston

Boston’s Avon Walk for Breast Cancer is a fantastic charity and a really uplifting (no pun intended), hyper-organized event that raises money to support access to breast cancer care, as well as ultimately finding a cure.  I’ve volunteered for the Walk in the past at both the Event Eve check-in and the Closing Ceremonies and worked with so many other friendly, cheerful ladies, including my mom, and genuinely had a good time.  This year, I’m pleased to note that I’ve got a friend walking 39.3 miles– that is a marathon and a half, literally– in Boston’s Avon Walk for Breast Cancer May 14-15, 2011.

If you’d like to help out with this year’s walk, Avon is looking for volunteers this Saturday, May 7, starting at 9AM, to “Paint the town Pink” by distributing “Route Flyers” to residences on the Avon Walk route and helping spread the word that the walk will take place the following weekend.  The flyers will minimize any surprises when thousands of participants pass by their house as well as encourage residents to show their support by drawing up posters or setting out balloons and cheering on walkers the day of the event.

Every volunteer flyer distributing group will start and end at the same location and be accompanied by an Avon staff member who will be available to answer questions and help out.  They’ll even have certificates in case you’d like to volunteer in somebody’s honor for Mother’s Day that you can wrap up as a gift and they’ll even hand out a “fun little pink surprise” from Avon for their thanks & appreciation for your volunteering (did I mention that they are hyper-organized?!).

Here’s some more information on the charity walk from the site’s webpage:

“The Avon Walk for Breast Cancer is the Avon Foundation’s largest annual fundraising initiative, and also one of the largest fundraising programs in the country. From 2003 through 2010, the Avon Walks have raised more than $380 million – funds that are directly saving lives. The Avon Walk for Breast Cancer also raises extraordinary awareness as participants spend an entire weekend walking 39 miles through cities and towns around the country. In 2010 alone, thousands of donors supported more than 21,000 Walkers and Crew raising more than $55 million in the national 9-event series!”
