Brentwood’s A Votre Sante: Truly to Your Health

Among the many restaurants in Los Angeles that claim to specialize in healthy, organic fare, Brentwood’s A Votre Sante is one of the few that truly commits itself to salubrious excellence.  Nestled on San Vicente right next to the Brentwood Country Mart, the charming, café-style restaurant whose name means “to your health” in French has been offering an extensive variety of feel-good foods since 1987.

Even though I feel like I’ve been to A Votre Sante a thousand times, I never cease to be impressed by how lovely the food looks.  Before you can even consider the menu, colorful plates at surrounding tables seem to demand your attention, begging the question, “ooh, what are they having?” (that’s what I always do, at least). Every dish is composed with precision and elegance: salads piled high with fresh greens, steamed vegetables, brown rice, avocado, and shredded purple cabbage; homemade Shelton Farms turkey meatloaf; organic chicken tucked in a whole wheat wrap with steamed veggies, tahini, avocado, and brown rice; gluten free brown rice pasta with tofu and fresh veggies in a ginger-tamari sauce; grilled falafel served with whole wheat pita, fresh tabuli, and cool hummus.  If you can bear to take your eyes off the food, you might also notice that the place is a celebrity hideaway—it’s a favorite of Dennis Quaid, Kate Hudson, Jessica Alba, and Dylan McDermott.

When I first moved to LA last August, A Votre Sante became my go-to place for fresh, organic food.  Like many native Angelenos, I like to eat clean (which, for those of you who don’t know, is the elimination of processed food from the diet), and A Votre Sante was one of the few restaurants I found that catered to clean eating so wholly: though I’m not a vegan, the menu boasts many vegan-friendly items in conjunction with a wide selection of hormone- and antibiotic-free meats and fish.  What’s more, all of their fresh-made desserts are sweetened with organic fruit juice as opposed to refined sugar.  If you’re not in the mood for dessert, definitely end your meal with a soy chai latte—it’s like Christmas in a cup.

So the next time you find yourself itching for some truly nutritious eats, make sure you give A Votre Sante a whirl.  The restaurant features indoor and outdoor seating and serves breakfast until 3 p.m. every day (oh, and make sure you try the blue corn and banana pancakes—they’re divine).
