Hair Trend Alert: Feather Hair Extensions

Feather hair extensions, the newest hair trend.

Feathers are the new “it” hair accessory. Making their debut in runway shows for fall 2011, feather hair extensions are all the rage. Celebrities like Hilary Duff, Jennifer Love Hewitt, Selena Gomez, Roseanne, and even Aerosmith front man and new American Idol judge Steven Tyler have all been swallowing this look up. It’s a trend that transcends age and gender boundaries. Much like how tinsel in the hair was popular, feather hair extensions are the “mane” trend of the season. Adding a feathery flare to your locks will give you an instant fun, boho look. I’m envisioning a pair of light-wash wide-leg jeans, a silk cream-colored, billowy-sleeved blouse, a huge sun hat, camel boots, and lots and lots of wooden bangles as the perfect outfit to match this trend. Seventies, anyone?

How does it work? The feathers are either clipped or sewn into your hair and last for up to six weeks. Wash and style them with the rest of your hair until you’re ready to remove them. Go with feathers that are similar in color to your hair for a subtle look or go all out by choosing big feathers in eye-catching colors.

Interested in the look? Ask your local hair salon if they are in on the trend which can cost you anywhere from $10 to $45 and as little as 10 minutes. If you’re a DIY kind of girl, install the feathers yourself with your own feather hair kit. You can find feather hair extensions everywhere and anywhere including Fine Feather Heads, Hair Flairs, and Feather Hair Extensions Online. Here’s a video on how to do it yourself.
