Quidam, the award-winning Cirque du Soleil show known for artfully delicate movements and a thought-provoking story line, is back on tour and is now playing at the Cow Palace until April 17th. Quidam tells the story of a little girl named Zoe who dreams up a fanciful world when left ignored by her parents. Zoe’s world is highlighted by characters such as The Target and The Aviator who represent feelings of uncertainty and desire, curiosity and love. Acts featuring intricate aerial performances, gravity-defying balancing acts, and fluidly symmetric dances develop from Zoe’s imagination and unfold on the stage.
Quidam, (the show’s creators describe the name to mean “a nameless passer-by, alone in a crowd, in a society that has become too impersonal”) evokes a significantly darker image than other Cirque shows. The plot, characters and acts border on existential, drawing on questions such as “is this the real world or a dream world?” and “is what you see what you get?” It helps to read a synopsis before attending the performance and to know that this is a more tranquil and blue show compared to other performances.
Two of the acts, Banquine (Italian acrobatic act) and Diabolos (Chinese yo-yos), have won awards on the global stage. All of the acts in Quidam are jaw-dropping manipulations of bodies and props, including ribbons, rope and wheels. It certainly is something to see.
Quidam is at the Cow Palace until April 17th.
