Review of Crown and Crumpet

Feeling cheeky? Then Crown and Crumpet is the place for you! Less than two years old, this English tea house puts a very modern twist on tea drinking, crumpet eating, and sherry sipping. This weekend I had the pleasure of not only dining at C&C but meeting the owner Mrs. Crumpet herself (or as she is formally known, Amy). My experience was a delightful, delicious, and slightly tipsy one.

When I first entered C&C I was struck by the elaborate décor. Although overwhelming (and dare I say over the top) everything thing from the flat screen TV in the fireplace displaying burning logs to the customized flatware with pink accents, was meticulously positioned around the room. Although the space was quite big for Ghirardelli Square the sheer number of things in the common area made the venue feel intimate without being claustrophobic.

Mama Mac and I were greeted by the hostess and sat at a table by the window. We ordered the “Tea for Two” ($21 a person) which included a selection of eight tea sandwiches, four scones with cream, jam, and lemon curd, two crumpets, eight sweets, and two large pots of tea. Since there were a staggering four full pages of loose leaf tea to choose from and my knowledge of tea is limited to the selection offered at work (bitter green tea or hot water) our trolley dolly was kind enough to bring over a few flavors for us to smell. I chose “Strawberry Fields” and Mama Mac chose “Marie Antoinette”.

Both flavors were amazing and not just because I’m use to tea that tastes very similar to bitter hot water. Our food came out moments later and we began to dine. Although the portions were small the ingredients were of very high quality and authentic.  After the meal we were, as the menu says, “Feeling a bit Jane Austin-ish” and ordered a glass of sherry which then turned into a glass of port which in turn resulted in me buying one of their adorable, custom “Crown and Crumpet” tea pots ($49 at the gift shop).

I would highly recommend this place! It’s like high tea meets happy hour. Good food, great tea, adorable atmosphere. Oh and be sure to make reservations if you plan on visiting C&C on the weekend! This would be a great spot for parties (there was a bridal showering going on while I was there!), lunch and/ or dinner with your girlfriends, Mother’s day, afternoons with you gay best friend.
