Dionna Mash is a writer, do-gooder, and California native. Born and raised in San Diego, she is now ecstatic to finally be residing in her mother’s hometown of San Francisco. She got an early start in writing when she realized that math was never going to be her strong subject, and reading and writing naturally became her forte in school. She recently graduated from California State University Chico where she studied instructional design and technology and communication design. Since, she has been pursuing a career in journalism to fulfill her passion in writing, public relations, and social media marketing. In her spare time Dionna loves to explore new restaurants, discover small craft breweries and wineries, shop for her shoe fetish, and is always on the hunt to find a “hole in the wall” coffee shop to settle down in. She likes to stay active in her community and was volunteering regularly with the Community Action Volunteers and Education program in college where she served as a Group leader organizing weekly trips to senior homes to make crafts and play games. She also volunteers with national parks and can be seen spending her weekends cleaning up Golden Gate Park and restoring trails. Dionna has written for news organizations such as KHSL-TV in Chico, California where she interned in the newsroom, and wrote a weekly sex and relationship column in The Orion newspaper. Before residing in Bay Area, Dionna was living in Denver, Colorado where she worked at an interactive marketing agency by day and served at an upscale wine bar by night. She’s currently in the process of writing a book titled “A Green Apron’s Point of View,” where she narrates an entertaining six years of her life as a Starbucks barista.

Bin 38: Not Just A Wine Bar

This weekend I had the pleasure of turning 24 and was on the hunt to find a cozy wine bar in the city to settle down in for my small celebration. My boyfriend and I decided to try out Bin 38, located in the Marina district, which turned out to be beyond impressive. The ambiance, food, wine selection, and service were exactly what I had in mind for my birthday. Their dim lighting and subtle decor made our dining experience really romantic. We had a window seat with a street view, and had the pleasure of “people watching” another party complete with (from my assumption) a overly buzzed birthday girl. Five stars for entertainment.

As for the food, we ordered the bruschetta for our app, the organic petaluma chicken with creamed kale, brown butter gnocchi, and hedgehog mushrooms for my entree, and my boyfriend ordered the grilled Hawaiian Walu. There were so many items on the menu that all looked amazing, but we were extremely pleased with our choices. It was all delicious! I highly recommend their bruschetta because it was very unique as far as typical bruschetta goes. Bin 38′s bruschetta is composed of house made ricotta, artichokes, and castelvetrano olive tapendae. Do you love melt in your mouth cheesy, yummy, goodness? This appetizer is for you.

Oh did I mention the wine? When my boyfriend made our reservation through his Yelp app on his iPhone, Yelp was so kindly to suggest he “check in” when we got there for special offers. After doing so we were told to show the server our check-in and get a $5 dollar glass of wine. Although it was only their house red, it was a delicious, very drinkable syrah. I’m not one to turn down a $5 dollar glass of wine ever… so I was far from disappointed! I also ordered a glass of their Casa LaPostolle Carmenere because we carried it at the wine bar I worked at in Denver and I was feeling nostalgic. It was divine as usual.

Our service and server were also impressive. She was so kind and attentive, and noted it was my birthday by bringing out warmed chocolate cake complete with dulce de leche and mexican chocolate ice cream. There was no embarrassing song and dance, just me, my boyfriend, a small candle, and a beautiful dessert. Decadent.

I hear they have a back patio worth talking about as well. This wine bar is quintessential San Francisco!
