The outdoor clothing company Patagonia is sponsoring a voters’ choice donation program for the third year in a row. For this year’s Voice Your Choice campaign, the SoHo and the Upper West Side stores have each chosen three local environmental organizations from which voters can choose. The organization with the most votes collected between March 10 and 31 will be awarded $2,500, with the second- and third-place organizations receiving $1,500 and$1,000, respectively.
The SoHo store nominated In Our BackYards, connecting donors and volunteers to local environmental initiatives, Rockaway Waterfront Alliance, working to both revitalize and promote programming on the Rockaway Waterfront, and Recycle a Bicycle, a community-run bike shop and education center. Patagonia’s Upper West Side store employees nominated the Brooklyn Waterfront Greenway Initiative, committed to cleaning and developing that area, Sustainable South Bronx, working to make the South Bronx and other communities run more sustainably, and finally Clean Ocean Action, improving the water quality off the New Jersey/New York coast. All 27 nationwide Patagonia stores are participating in the Voice Your Choice campaign as part of the company’s renowned support of environmental initiatives.
Head of Marketing for Patagonia’s North America Retail Division Vickie Achee explained, “We have been giving grants at a local level since our first store opened in the 1970s, but for years the grantees were decided by Patagonia staff. We decided several years ago to create a separate program enabling customers to have a say in their own communities, and that’s how Voice Your Choice was born.” Achee stated that $135,000 will be distributed by Patagonia this year through the Voice Your Choice program.
Participants can cast one vote per store visit, so if there is an initiative you are rooting for, you can make several visits to each store location!
