The very first thing that I noticed about the Wayfare Tavern was that nearly everyone in the restaurant was wearing a suit in the middle of
the day. This is a rarity in San Francisco. Even many of the fanciest restaurants will have at least a handful of patrons wearing jeans and a button-up. The lighting was dark and moody, like I had suddenly been transported through time to a 1930’s back room for a power lunch…a real mixture of seriousness and seduction. The decor features dark wood paneling and gray walls.
I had come to the restaurant at the suggestion of a local businesswoman and entrepreneur who has impeccable taste and style (she was also my lunch partner). We ended up having one of the more memorable meals that I’ve had in the Bay area. The menu changes on a seasonal basis. I had the duck and it was tender and delicious. The staff was highly knowledgeable about the meal and was able to suggest a great wine pairing. For dessert, we had tea and shared apple crisp with ice cream. The winter menu is currently posted on their website and features delicacies such as ‘dates wrapped in bacon’ and ‘duck gumbo’.
This restaurant is the brainchild of celebrity chef and Food Network star Tyler Florence, so the menu is rife with serious palate pleasers. I would recommend Wayfare Tavern for a sultry dinner or a 2-hour power lunch. The lunch meal, including wine, was around $120.
