10th Annual Sugar and Champagne Affair Benefiting the Washington Humane Society

The Washington Humane Society’s 10th annual dessert and champagne reception hosted by Chef Todd and Ellen Gray of Equinox Restaurant honored local crusaders against animal cruelty: Washington Humane Society’s Humane Law Enforcement Officers, Animal Control Officers, and Humane Educators. This celebration of all things sugary and sweet, showcased the DC area’s most talented pastry chefs.  Attendees enjoyed delectable confections complemented by some of the world’s finest sparkling wines. The VIP reception presented an exclusive savory gathering prepared by the finest chefs of the national capital region.  Outside the Ritz Carlton were several food trucks, which donated part of their proceeds to the Washington Humane Society.

Held at the luxurious Ritz Carlton in Washington, DC, the 10th Annual Sugar and Champagne Affair benefiting the Washington Humane Society was a huge success, raising thousands of dollars, but at press time figures hadn’t been released.

My favorite delectable were the beignets, from 42 Degrees Catering, they were so good I sheepishly had two.

There was a VIP Chef’s Tasting Room from 6:00p.m. to 7:30p.m and then from 7:00pm to 9:30p.m. the General Reception was open for mout watering sugary delights. Besides treats for humans, there were also treats for the animals.  Dogs were everywhere and surprisingly well-behaved!  Volunteers walked around with dogs that were up for adoption as well.  Silent auction items were plentiful and also were vendors catering to animals.

Awards were handed out by the DC Humane Society’s President Lisa LaFontaine to DC locals who have made a difference in animal control and improving animals’ lives in the district.

All in all a great event, it was a little crowded and chaotic so I always recommend coming early to get the most out of the event and avoid the lines!  The dogs were amazingly well behaved and the affair was very well organized.  The food was delicious as was the wine.  I learned about new places to go eat too!

Lastly did you know?  The Washington Humane Society (WHS), is the only Congressionally-chartered animal welfare agency in the United States, that has been the area’s leading voice for animals since 1870.
