Use Contrast in Decorating To Create Interest

One way to make your home’s interior more visually appealing is by contrasting light and dark hues. In it’s simplest form, this can be achieved by using darker fabrics against lighter backgrounds and vice versa. On a larger scale, contrast light and dark wall colors throughout the home in rooms that are adjacent to each other. For instance, if your foyer walls are dark, go for a lighter color in the rooms that can be seen from the foyer. This same rule applies to sofa fabrics, window treatment fabrics, pillows on sofas and rugs under furniture. Using contrast in this way makes colors throughout your home pop.

A Golden Rule Of Design: Contrast. Contrast always creates interest, whether it is with colors, textures or materials.

This method of contrasting colors throughout your home also makes choosing colors easier! For example, if you start with a neutral paint color, feel free to add color that contrasts in the window treatments. Step by Step as you choose colors around your home, consider how they will or will not contrast with whats around it. This will help guide you through your color choices.
