Miss A Columnist

Sonya Lowery is a long time resident of Maryland, but was born in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. An entrepreneur since 1999, Lowery has since become an author, speaker, cover model, thrill-seeker, and mom. These experiences have taken her around the world for both business and pleasure, and prepared her for her current role as host of WorldNextDoorTV.com - a 3-minute video series dedicated to unearthing little known “Hot Spots”.

Lowery has spoken to many eager “out-goers” and found that most were looking for clever things to do, new places to eat and new experiences to share. With her quirky idiosyncrasies, Lowery began to compile a list of little-known jewels. This list would be the beginnings of the on-line show that would shed light on the Washington area’s best kept secrets. This web series would become the effort to get people off of their couches, out of their comfort zones, and into discovering the World Next Door.

Hotel Monaco and Poste Moderne Brasserie in Washington, DC

I am a big fan of the “staycation”. You know – things to do and places to go to get away from it all without actually leaving town. I was determined to find a nice, quaint, dog-friendly hotel for the weekend and was surprised to find all of the little gems that I found in Hotel Monaco. Now I have driven past this building on numerous occasions and thought that I had been just about everywhere in Penn Quarter – but I had NO idea! I have never had the pleasure of visiting this unique, pet friendly hot-spot.

Built in 1839, Hotel Monaco is beautiful, historic, and full of surprises. It was the original post office for Washington, DC and the first city building made of marble. The Hotel is also very proud to boast that they grow a lot of their own vegetables and think “Green”. The center courtyard, which is part of their restaurant Poste Moderne Brasserie, is a gorgeous spot to have drinks with friends or a pig roast – yes, I said pig roast.

There is so much to do and see at this Kimpton Hotel and I’m glad that my dog Lola and I decided to come out and experience it. Between the winding staircases, long elegant hallways, elaborate rooms, and of course their daily wine hour – I’m hooked.
