After having a great time at the 19th Annual Rodin Garden Party in Philadelphia, I was back in New York for my last day of shows/presentations at Mercedes Benz Fashion Week. My morning started with a mad dash uptown to the Hudson Hotel to view Yuna Yang’s Spring/Summer 2011 Collection entitled “My Black Wedding Dress.” I almost thought I wouldn’t have time to see the collection, but I’m very glad that I did.
The collection was an attempt to capture by the struggle between femininity and luxury. It was inspired by the 1960s era of housewives, a la Betty Draper of Mad Men fame, who on the outside have the appearance of conventional archetypes of femininity but have far more depth. The designer used classic silhouettes combined with more luxe fabrics of silk, lace and organza.
Yuna Yang studied in Korea, Milan and London and is currently based in New York. The designer was featured on the cover of WWD earlier this year. Yang is definitely one to watch.
