One Book, One Chicago Launches With Literary Icon Toni Morrison

Here is Why I Love Chicago Reason #2,055

It’s that time of year again; when Chicago launches it’s citywide reading program, One Book, One Chicago. This innovative program brings together a diverse group of peeps from all over the city to cultivate a culture of reading and discussion. The first book of choice is “A Mercy” by Toni Morrison. Ms. Morrison was the first black woman to receive the Nobel Prize in Literature, in 1993. Even if you haven’t had the chance to read “A Mercy,”  it will be interesting to participate in this provocative discussion on the book and her impact on American lit.

Here are the rest of the deets:

Date: Tuesday, September 7, 2010

Time: 6:00 pm

Location:
Harold Washington Library Center
Cindy Pritzker Auditorium
400 S. State Street, 60605

Dwight McBride, Dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at the University of Illinois at Chicago and Professor of African American Studies and Gender and Women’s Studies, will lecture on Toni Morrison’s importance not just as a novelist, but as a leading American intellectual.

There will be a brief performance from the opera Margaret Garner, by composer Richard Danielpour and for which Morrison wrote the libretto, presented with assistance from the Ryan Opera Center at the Lyric Opera of Chicago; and a give-away of free copies of A Mercy to the first 385 attendees!

Ms. Morrison will lead an in-person discussion of “A Mercy” on October 19th at the Chicago Symphony Center.
