Experience the Cultural Side of Chicago with Deeply Rooted and Aida

Deeply Rooted Chicago

This summer, I had the honor of attending the 15th Anniversary Kick-Off concert for Deeply Rooted dance ensemble. Deeply Rooted is one of the most well-respected ensembles, hailing from the Windy City but known internationally. Founded in 1995 by artistic directors, Kevin Iega Jeff and Gary Abbott, their mission, in part, is to “create world class dance reflecting the vital essence of humanity while building grassroots connections that stimulate public engagement and community involvement.” This concert was the beginning of what I know will be an amazing celebration of culture, community and awareness.

The performances featured music by Mahalia Jackson, Donny Hathaway, Roger Eno, Roberta Flack and more. There was truly something for everyone as the dancers showed off their range of talents as well as appeal. My personal fave was “I Am Deeply Rooted” – it was affirming, on almost every level, personal and universal.

If you didn’t catch the kick-off concert, you still have the opportunity to see Deeply Rooted in action! Stay tuned for their performance on October 29, 2010 at the Harris Theater for Music and Dance in Millennium Park (Chicago), tours in the Midwest and the East Coast in fall/winter 2010-2011. Yep, Deeply Rooted will be coming to a city near you.

Aida by the Bailiwick Company in Chicago

Aida is in Chicago! Aida tells the story of a high-ranking Egyptian soldier, engaged to the Pharaoh’s daughter and next in line for the throne, who falls in love with the Nubian slave, Aida. When he discovers that she is the daughter of the King of Nubia, each is forced to choose between love for country and love for the other. With a driving, pop-rock score by Elton John, the story challenges audiences to consider the question, “What would you sacrifice for love?”

The Bailiwick Chicago’s production of this Broadway phenom features choreography by the directors of Deeply Rooted. Aida opened on July 10, 2010 and will run through August 1, 2010. Catch it while you can!
