Miss A Columnist

Melissa Curtin is the LA City Editor for Miss A. After teaching third grade for many years in an east coast public school and a LA private school, she tutors privately all over Los Angeles from Venice to Bel Air. Recently, she launched an educational T-shirt line called Wear2learn which can be purchased online and soon at Kitson Kids in Beverly Hills. When she is not working out, hiking a canyon, or at the beach, she is writing. Her latest dream come true has been travel writing for Johnny Jet.

After teaching in the Maryland public school system for almost a decade, she left the conservative East Coast environment in Washington, DC for West Coast living. Eager for adventure, inner growth, and a new environment, she packed her car and took to the open road on her own landing in her new home - Hollywood, California. As a Connecticut Yankee at heart, she has now lived in Los Angeles for almost five years surrounded by the stars.

Melissa graduated from Gettysburg College with a double major in psychology and art history. Soon after, she earned a Master's Degree in education. Melissa traveled around the world on Semester at Sea, and earned a Fulbright Scholarship which enabled her to teach in England. A lust for travel and learning has fueled her globe trotting ever since. Some of her favorite destinations are Fiji, Morocco, Vietnam, Belgium, Italy, Sicily, Prague, Egypt, Australia, Greece, and Paris.

Los Angeles has won over her heart. She is constantly taking advantage of what LA LA Land has to offer - new salons and restaurants, finding great deals, discovering new hikes and beaches, music, and West Coast fashion. If you have a LA event, restaurant, boutique, art or cultural event that you would like covered on Miss A, please contact Melissa at mcurtin230@aol.com. Byu-ti Hair Therapy: Great Affordable Salon in Los Angeles

Living in Los Angeles just warrants a plethora of hair salons, nail salons, spas and more. Everyone wants to feel good and look good every day. The hardest part about moving to a new city is determining how to find a hair salon that fits you. I have pretty easy hair and often just get the typical haircut and highlight, but even this can go wrong or leave you crying after paying a small fortune or the price of a month of groceries.

After moving to Los Angeles almost three years ago, I texted every friend I had asking where to go for a trim and highlight. There are literally thousands of salons here. I went to one very well-known male stylist in Hollywood, who made me feel uncomfortable because I thought he may ask me on a date by the end of the haircut. Another  famous salon I was told to try in Beverly Hills was a disaster. It was insanely busy, and the guy working on me was also helping several other women at the same time. When it was time for my hair to be washed, there was a long wait in this high-priced place. That didn’t make me feel very special. Then, when they could finally find a seat for me after the shampoo, a fight broke out between a pregnant hairdresser and  another hairdresser because her “seat” was taken by me. After I paid, I just wanted to cry! I had spent a sum equal to a hefty month of groceries or a hot new dress. My hair looked good, but not any better than any other place I had gone to before. Thank god for the bottomless champagne they kept giving me that made the blow to my wallet less horrifying.

Thus, after a few more stories like this, I tried another friend’s suggestion and drove all the way from Hollywood to a salon in Santa Monica. Byu-ti was a pleasant surprise because the stylists were professional, the salon was clean and affordable, and the hair stylists made me feel comfortable, and actually paid attention to me.  During my first experience at Byu-ti the female stylist named Andi asked me so many questions about my hair that I felt like I was on a hair interview. It made me feel like she really cared about my hair, and took the time to learn more about it before offering her expert suggestions and ideas about products, cut and color. I believe they call this the “Six Step Consulting Process.” The salon’s actual motto is GIVE GOODNESS.

Natasha Sunshine is the owner. Ha! I wonder if this is her real name, but everyone in the salon sure has a sunny demeanor. You can pick up Pureology and Redkin products at Byu-ti, as well as Natasha’s own creations, like her most popular, a vitamin that makes your hair grow twice as fast as normal. If you get blond highlights, I highly recommend Byu-ti. I fell in love with the way Lara made my hair look naturally sun-kissed and beach golden. What also makes this salon amazing is they always offer discounts. I often get emails or updates on Facebook, like Monday and Tuesday blowouts for cheap. If you mention this website article, Lara will give you $25 off any hair service. Lara specializes in the Brazilian Blowout and hair coloring, especially for blondes. It was fun to see Byu-ti at the Global Green Pre-Oscar Party.

Check out their website for more fun tips and videos. You can watch Dean McDermott, Tori Spelling of 90210‘s hubby get a funky haircut, or learn how to do some easy summer do’s, like the Malibu Twist, Hollywood Polish, or Beverly Hills Pony. I highly recommend trying this salon for your next hair care experience.
