The Return of 1980′s Classic: Lynne Glassman Coloring Generation Y Beautiful

Lynne Glassman flanked by two Bras & Brunch attendees showing off their colors!

Last Sunday at Sylene of Washington, I met Lynne Glassman, EdD and introduced her to the audience of approximately fifty women who attended Bras & Brunch.

Lynne Glassman is a certified image consultant, professional color/silhouette analyst, personal shopper, and closet surgeon with more than 15 years of experience in the world of fashion. Lynne applies her doctoral degree in education to teaching men and women how to create their personal style. She regularly teaches courses in metropolitan Washington, DC, and provides seminars for national trade associations, law firms, corporations, boutiques, department stores, women’s groups, and even educational series including an Oct 2009 seminar for the Smithsonian Resident Associates Program.

Lynne has been featured on the Discovery Channel, Channel 7 and Channel 8 News, and has been interviewed by the Washington Post, the Washingtonian and Cosmopolitan magazines, and Washington Woman and Associations Now and The Georgetowner newspapers.  The “Doctor of Dress” also consults for the famed Rancho La Puerta, Canyon Ranch, and Golden Door Spas as well as for contestants in the Miss America Pageant.

Lynne’s fun, informative and interactive program was a huge hit at Bras & Brunch. Like it or not, we are judged by others based upon our appearance. Within the first five seconds of meeting someone, you make a critical first impression which is based almost entirely on how you look.  Lynne believes every person can look attractive if they know what styles and colors are becoming.  She taught the audience how color can work for or against you.

I was one of the women in the audience old enough to remember Carole Jackson’s hit classic Color Me Beautiful in the early 1980′s. For a decade, women and gay men across the country were obsessed with their colors. If the question in the 1970′s was “What’s your sign?”, in the 1980′s it was all “What’s your season?” I was blessed to have had my colors done when I was a teenager. Just like back in the 1980s I’m between a Summer and a Winter. I’m planning to meet with Lynne at her home to figure this thing out once and for all. I must know which I am. If I’m a Winter, black will be in my palette, but if I’m a Summer there is no black, so I’m sort of hoping for Winter.

There were a lot of Generation Y women in the audience who missed this 80′s trend, and aren’t in-the-know about the importance of wearing the proper color for your skintone. I’m thinking we need to revive this book, like we have the Preppy Handbook. Ladies, just because a color is the “it” color of a particular season, that doesn’t mean it’s right for you! There ARE secret ways to wear a color that isn’t in your palette. Lynne said that back in the 1980′s women of color were all lumped into one season, but like so many other things, over time the thinking by color analysts has changed and has been updated. It was interesting at Bras & Brunch to see women of all skintones have their colors done, and to see the fun transformation.

In addition to the color analysis, Lynne also told us how important it is to work with your individual facial shape. My facial shape is square like Paris Hilton, Sandra Bullock,  Isabella Rosellini, Demi Moore. This plays a huge role in accessories such as eyeglasses, necklaces and earrings. Shopping for the right necklines and jacket lapels can also make a huge difference once you know what is most flattering to your facial shape. Lynne also shared a few tips for “closet surgery”.  Goodness knows, we women could always use more closet space and help organizing our wardrobe more efficiently. Whether you are a fashion icon or not, Lynne has simple ideas to remake or update your image. I highly recommend her services, which are very reasonable. I think it’s $175 to have your colors done. I also highly recommend her for women’s groups. She was a terrific speaker and everyone had a great time!

This is the version of Carole Jackson's "Color Me Beautiful" I recall!
