How To Find The Right Place To Volunteer BY Andrea Rodgers

 Volunteering with Inner City Outings
Dear Miss A,
I just recently ended things with the girl I was seeing, and my job has a lot of down time right now. In an effort to stay busy, I’ve decided to start volunteering in and around Arlington, Virginia. I’m kind of stuck though, as I don’t know what resources exist for finding something that is a good fit for me. Do you have any insight on where I can find a list of organizations that need people?
Much appreciated,
Looking to Volunteer
Dear Looking to Volunteer,
DC Cares is a great way to look for volunteer opportunities. They connects individual, family and business volunteers with community

service groups. I’ve done everything from volunteering with the elderly, to taking at-risk inner city kids on hikes and to museums, to building houses with Habitat for Humanity through DC Cares. You go to an orientation, and after that you just sign up online. You can look for opportunities by issue – hunger, AIDS, homelessness; location; or by date and time. It’s great because you can volunteer at a lot of different places, and eventually you’ll find one that is the right fit for you. For me, it was the Sierra Club’s Inner City Outings. I loved those kids from Anacostia’s Highland Addition projects who attended Draper Elementary School, and enjoyed getting to be active and going on hikes or checking out museums with the kids on cold or rainy days.
Volunteer Match is also a really great site that makes it easier for good people and good causes to connect. The organization offers a variety of online services to support a community of nonprofit, volunteer and business leaders committed to civic engagement.

Let me know where you end up volunteering,
Miss A
