39th Annual Scottish Christmas Walk Weekend

Old Town Alexandria Holidays

Old Town Alexandria’s biggest weekend for celebration is schedule for Friday, December 4th and Saturday, December 5th, the 39th Annual Scottish Christmas Walk Weekend.  Over 100 Scottish Clans, pipe and drum bands, Scottish dancers, re-enactment groups, Scottie dog groups, dignitaries and, of course, Santa Claus will march through the streets of Old Town on Saturday afternoon.

While enjoying the parade, it’s also a great day to walk around Old Town and look at the holiday decorations, particularly the traditional Apple and Pineapple Swagones created out of fresh fruit and other native materials.   I love the Williamsburg inspired “fans” that are displayed above front doors, arranged out of magnolia leaves, boxwood, pineapples, apples and other colorful fruits.   There is even a contest for the best decoration, but only décor made out of fresh, natural materials, no artificial decorations or lights allowed.

From 11:00AM until 4:00PM, you can also participate in the Scottish Walk Holiday Designer Tour of Homes.  Stroll through lovely properties dressed up for the holidays by acclaimed interior designers and local florists.  This is a great way to see the interiors of some historic and recently renovated homes.  Wear your winter boots and bring your gloves, because it’s usually a cold crisp day!  For more information on Scottish Walk activities, visit http://www.scottishchristmaswalk.com/
