Politics anyone? Living in DC provides locals the chance to experience all kinds of events, but political events are definitely the most prolific and popular here in the Nation’s Capital. I had the privilege of attending a night of networking sponsored by the Women’s Campaign Forum (WCF) on Tuesday, June 2, 2009 at the fabulous rooftop deck of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) Headquarters. The WCF supports dynamic women who want to be part of the political process.

The location was breathtaking. The IBEW is located in the heart of China Town. Their building is just the right mix of modern architecture with minimalist décor. As I proceed to the rooftop I had to take a moment to absorb the view. The first word that came to my mind was WOW, the location had a great panoramic view of DC. Despite the uncertain weather, this was a well-attended event.

The event had a full range of delightful appetizers and drinks. I have to give kudos to the events planner who took care of every detail such as the set up of the food, the placement of the chairs and the ample sized tent, which was needed in the unpredictable weather we had Tuesday.

The attendees varied from local young professionals to notable politicians, to members and affiliates of the Union. As a matter of fact the sampling of attendees included: Rick Diegel (Former IBEW Political Director); Jennifer Brunner (Ohio Secretary of State and she is currently running for US Senate); and Jeanette Rishell (Virginia Delegate candidate for VA-50).

There were several speeches and remarks made regarding the organization and the need for more young women leaders. The networkers listened to a night of inspirational words, as well as startling statics regarding women in politics. For example, the United States is ranked 72nd amongst all nations in terms of women holding public office. The examples and statistics really did help drive the message of awareness and need regarding women in public service. Sam Bennett, the President of WCF concluded the event regarding the organization’s mission and the importance of supporting organizations like them.

I made sure to thank Sam and her staff for a wonderful evening. Even though, I met Sam once, she remembered me and gave me a big hug. Her strength and down-to-earthiness is quite evident in her interactions with individuals and her staff. I also appreciated her patience in taking several photos with me even though she had many guests who wanted to speak with her. A wonderful view, wonderful people, and a night of wonderful inspiration. What else could someone ask for?
