Lady In Red: What To Wear With A Red Dress Or Suit?

Gorgeous red Dior suit that I’ve seen in the window of the Dior in Chevy Chase. It’s not appropriate for a 5 o’clock wedding, but I adore it!

Dear Miss A,

I am attending a 5 o’clock wedding and bought a beautiful red St. John suit for the occasion. I cannot decide which color shoes and hose to go with. The sales associate at Neiman’s mentioned black hose and black shoes because there is some black in the buttons. Should I try to find matching red shoes? What color hose goes best with red. You always look so wonderful and I would like to hear your advice.

Looking forward to hearing from you,

Puzzled

Dear Puzzled,

I’m not a big fan of colorful shoes, as I’ve mentioned. I would wear nude stockings and a nude neutral shoe with the red suit. Now, when I say nude, I do NOT mean that horrid sun tan color that women wore in the 1970’s. I mean more of a buff color. Having one color for your hosiery and shoes will elongate your leg. Black shoes and black hose would do the same, however since black is a darker color it would compete with the red in your suit. I would go with the nude so that the red suit will draw all the attention. You don’t have to be “matchy-matchy” anymore, so perhaps go with a black evening bag to tie in the black from the suit’s buttons.

I hope that this helps! Enjoy the wedding!

– Miss A
