Twelve Days of Christmas At Moojoo Ken
Andrea Rodgers at Moojoo Ken on U Street holding their Red Filling Station Handbag ($495)
Admitedly, I’m more of a “Georgetown Girl” than a “U Street Girl”, but I was in the neighborhood the other day for a meeting with a magazine and thought I’d stop by Moojoo Ken at 1512 U Street, Washington, DC 20009 to check it out. I missed the MooJoo Ken party on December 3rd, and have heard so much about the store. I’m a big believer in supporting local business to keep tax dollars and jobs in our community. Alex Ayrom was at the store, and we got to talking and he told me all about how he and his partners got into business, and the inspiration behind his designs. I had so much fun talking with him, and learned so much! He’s fabulous!
The Moojoo Ken logo is a design that Alex doodled when he was a child. It’s unique, and has special meaning to him, and is now something we can all enjoy. You will find this logo design in all Moojoo Ken products, although it may not be immediately recognizable.
Moojoo Ken actually means “unconditional” in Japanese, which to me (a dating and relationship expert) brings to mind “unconditional love”, which is so rare to find even from our parents. As a Christian, I know that God’s love is truly unconditional, and that unconditional love is how we ought to love others. No matter what your religion, I think we all long for unconditional love, and are blessed when we find it.
Moojoo Ken designs their own scarves, shoes and handbags, and commission local jewelry designers –such as Evelyn Brooks, Jennifer Squires, Keisha Watson, Serena Bradford, and Glitteryblue –to create jewelry inspired by the Moojoo Ken designs and featuring their logo.
The Moojoo Ken designs are featured not only on scarves, but on shoes and handbags. This was something they pioneered, but now the likes of Christian Louboutin are also trying painted leather designs. The designs are named after Washington, DC neighborhoods like Woodley Park, Embassy Row, and Foggy Bottom. Interestingly, the Foggy Bottom design has “Change is Good” embossed into the bottom of the bag as a sort of secret message! I think someone is an Obama fan! I think that handbag would be an incredible gift for the Obama fan in your life!
Call me boring, but I am not one to wear shoes with any color in them. I’m all about wearing solids, and wearing black or brown shoes and accessories. I ended up picking up the Penn Quarter scarf –a gorgeous red and black scarf which I know I’ll be able to wear for years with solid black outfits. I also like a beautiful high heel sling back shoe that is black with a touch of red trim, and their adorable Moojoo Ken logo. So whether you like adding pops of color to your wardrobe, or whether you have a preference for the more traditional use of color, there is something for everyone at Moojoo Ken. Besides their own designs, they carry a great selection of clothing which they choose to compliment their accessory designs. If you’re a fan of interesting solid pieces- this is a great place to shop for clothing! I really urge my readers to think outside the box (stores) and shop at local boutiques and support local entrepreneurs, and local designers.
I decided to highlight 12 great items and do a little Twelve Days of Christmas at Moojoo Ken. Maybe I was inspired by my outfit the day I stopped in, but this collection has a red and black theme:
